New book: Dendrobiont and thamnobiont cicadas (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha) from the Republic of Moldova

The methodological guide includes the biology, ecology and distribution of 98 leaf- and planthopper species from 60 genera and 10 families. The biological cycle of these species are related to various tree species, fruiting and forest shrubs, vine plantations. Cicadas belong to Class Insecta, order Hemiptera, suborder Auchenorrhyncha.

New book: Entomopathogenic bacteria

In the monograph "Entomopathogenic bacteria" authors Anna Moldovan, Natalia Munteanu-Molotievskiy, and Ion Toderas discuss the premises of the use of bacterial agents in the biological control of pest insects, with an emphasis on studied pest species. A separate chapter is dedicated to the basic methods of isolation, identification, and characterization of entomopathogenic bacteria. Also are presented the results on the development of bacterial agents for biological control of pests based on new strains isolated from the natural environment.

The Institute of Zoology in partnership with the Alexandru Ciubotaru National Botanical Garden (Institute) officially launched on 3 April 2024 the project “Assessment of the state of plant, fungi and animal species, development of the list of species with rarity status and the algorithm for their presentation in the 4th edition of the Red Book of the Republic of Moldova”.

The results of the scientific research on fauna and ecology of invertebrates, which were carried out in the Prutul de Jos Biosphere Reserve in 2002-2023, in the most diverse natural habitats, especially forest, meadow, palustral habitats, were included in the monograph „Fauna of the Prutul de Jos Biosphere Reserve. Invertebrates (Collembola, Odonata, Hemiptera, Coleoptera and Lepidoptera)”.

Mass death of swans in the Răut river basin

The mute swan (Cygnus olor) and the whooper swan (Cygnus cygnus) are vulnerable species, included in the Red Book of the Republic of Moldova (2015). They are large, robust and heavy birds with long and thin necks. Body weight is 9 kg in females and 12 kg in males, wingspan reaches 2-2.5 m. The swans are the largest water birds and are among the largest flying birds.
