The history of the Laboratory of Molecular Systematics and Phylogeny is relatively new, it starts in 2007 when within the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (ASM), the director of the institute, Academician Ion Toderas, determined by modern trends in the development of biological sciences, had founded the first laboratory of molecular biology. Academician Ion Toderas together with the two co-founders - Alexandru Movila (PhD in biological sciences) and Natalia Munteanu-Molotievskiy (PhD in biological sciences), established the research team and set up the Centre of General and Molecular Biology (2007-2010).

This laboratory opened more opportunities for the development, adjustment, and implementation of molecular biology approaches in the fundamental studies of evolution, systematics, zoogeography, and ecophysiological biogeochemistry of organisms in natural and anthropized ecosystems. Without this facility and equipment, modern research and the extension of new boundaries in the field of general biology and zoology would be impossible. The applicative research has focused on the development and elaboration of recovery paths of the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, both by preserving, protecting, and harnessing zoological diversity with biotechnological potential, as well as revealing of evolutionary cycles, and molecular diagnosis of infections caused by native and invasive animal species.

The establishment of the Centre of General and Molecular Biology was the culmination of efforts to develop a leading centre in the field of general and molecular biology of animals, which provided special facilities for cooperation with institutions in the country and abroad in the field of the application of molecular biology methods for the study of phylogeny, zoogeography, systematics and genetic diversity of the animal world in the hydrostatic space „Prut - Danube - Black Sea - Dniester”.

Later, in 2011, the Centre of General and Molecular Biology was reorganized in a larger entity called Centre with Multiple Users „General and Molecular Biology”, led by academician Ion Toderas, with two subunits 1) Laboratory of Molecular Systematics and Phylogeny, headed by Dr. hab. Lidia Toderas, and 2) Laboratory of Parasitology and Helminthology, headed by Dr. Rusu Stefan. In 2012 the management of the Laboratory of Molecular Systematics and Phylogeny was taken over by Dr. Tatiana Sulesco.

In 2014 as a result of the reorganization of the research institutions within the Academy of Science of Moldova the Centre with Multiple Users „General and Molecular Biology” incorporated other laboratories and a new entity called Biological Invasion Research Centre of the Institute of Zoology of the ASM was created, under the guidance of academician Ion Toderas and co-founders - corr.mem. Elena Zubcov and Dr. hab. Laurentia Ungureanu.

Right now, two laboratories and one research group are included in the Biological Invasion Research Centre:

  • Laboratory of Molecular Systematics and Phylogeny - head of the laboratory Dr. Roscov Elena
  • Laboratory of Parasitology and Helminthology - head of the laboratory Dr. Rusu Stefan
  • Beekeeping Group - head of the group Dr. Cebotari Valentina.

The laboratory consists of several research teams:

  1. Biological control of pest species;
  2. Hematophagous arthropods;
  3. Mathematical modeling and simulation of the functional processes of the Ixodidae population;
  4. Synthesis, testing, and selection of Coordinative Organic Compounds (COC) with useful properties for Aquaculture and Beekeeping;
  5. Reproduction strategies of fish species in conditions of instability of natural and anthropogenic factors.

Fundamental research direction: biological invasions and their impact on the diversity, structure, and functioning of natural and anthropized ecosystems of the Republic of Moldova

Applied research directions:

  • study of the diversity of beetles in conditions of instability of natural and anthropogenic factors and development of procedures for control of insect pests in the Republic of Moldova;
  • extensive research on the spatial distribution and genetic structure of the populations of economically important insects;
  • multidisciplinary research on the current state of the diversity of hematophagous arthropods, quantification of their ecological, epidemiological and socio-economic role with adverse implications on the biosecurity of the Republic of Moldova caused by climate change;
  • environmental quality assessment having as sensor-species honeybee (Apis mellifera) - the main pollinator in the Republic of Moldova;
  • assessing the consequences of adaptive reactions of animal cenoses to climate and biotop changes.

The main aim of the Laboratory of Molecular Systematics and Phylogeny is to study the integrative taxonomy of the animal world through cumulative approaches, to improve the level of inventory and efficient mapping of the biodiversity and the development of methods to control dangerous, invasive, and pest species.

  • The composition of insect complexes in the natural and anthropized ecosystems of the Republic of Moldova was inventoried and described, established the vulnerability of some relevant species in the fragmented habitats, identified adaptive particularities in the context of environmental instability.
  • For the first time, the fauna of sandflies, culicids, and culicoids was studied in detail, the presence of vector-borne zoonoses was established and the distribution maps of hematophagous species in the Republic of Moldova were elaborated.
  • Representatives of the Anopheles maculipennis and Culex pipiens complex were identified, has been established the faunal composition of the species of Culicidae, as a result of phenotypic and genotypic analysis, autogenous and non-autogenous forms of Culex pipiens pipiens have been found, which is very important for the European Database.
  • The National Catalogue „Diversity of hematophagous arthropods, zoo-, and phytohelminths from the wildlife of the Republic of Moldova” were included 35 mosquito species from the Culicidae family, 14 species of blackflies, 3 species of sandflies, and 22 species of Ixodidae ticks.
  • The species diversity of Ixodidae ticks was updated and the phenology of relevant species was described, were isolated and identified associated microorganisms of dangerous pests.
  • 16 linear DNA sequences for 3 ixodid tick species – vectors of emerging diseases, 3 species of Babezia, 2 species of Rickettsia, and Anaplasma were accepted and deposited in the Gene Bank of the National Biotechnology Information Center (USA).
  • For the first time, on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, in the population of the tick species Ixodes ricinus the presence of the human and animal pathogen Babesia venatorium, which causes the disease called babesiosis, was highlighted.
  • In the laboratory, the surveillance methods for hematophagous insects and ticks have been adjusted as potential vectors of emerging diseases in humans and animals.
  • The mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI, animal DNA barcode) gene sequences were obtained, using LepF1/LepR1 universal primers, for 77 small and medium-sized coleopteran specimens. The resulting sequences were stored in the International Barcode of Life Data System (BOLD) database (www.boldsystems.org).
  • Population genetic structure of the species Tatianaerhynchites aequatus (L.) (Coleoptera: Rhynchitidae) and Eusomus ovulum Germ. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) - significant pests of crops and medicinal plants, was revealed.
  • Bacterial communities of the pest species Byctiscus betulae L., Tatianaerhynchites aequatus (L.) (Coleoptera: Rhynchitidae), Sciaphobus squalidus (Gyll.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) were characterized. As a result, three strains of Bacillus thuringiensis were isolated, obtaining 2 patents (MD 4196 and MD 4304). From the microflora of pest lepidopteran species, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) and Spodoptera exigua (Hubner) were isolated 22 Bacillus spp. strains. The susceptibility of some insect species to infection with these bacterial strains is being investigated.
  • As a result of research conducted using classical and molecular-genetic methods, in the microflora of the pest species Sitona lineatus L., Hypera postica (Gyll.), and Protapion apricans (Hbst.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) 55 fungal strains belonging to 23 species and 3 phyla (Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, and Mucormycota) were identified, of which 8 strains are phytopathogens and 19 strains are potential biological control agents.
  • For the first time in the microflora of insects Sitona lineatus L. and Hypera postica (Gyll.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) were identified the fungal species Beauveria bassiana (Bals.-Criv.) Vuill., Beauveria spp., Isaria fumosorosea (Wize) A.H.S. Br. & G.Sm. and Isaria sp. with potential in biological control of these pests. A patent has been obtained (MD 4560). The following studies will reveal the insecticidal properties of isolated strains applied against key pests.
  • Coordinating organic compounds (COCs) with antimicrobial properties programmed for beekeeping needs were synthesized, tested, and identified.
  • Fundamental research was conducted on the genotyping and karyotyping of individuals of Cobitis spp. collected from the Dniester River basin to identify the diversity of pure parental species and hybrids.
