The Institute of Zoology participated in the Moldova 2021 Environment Day Festival, which took place on 26 June at the EcoLocal fair (Chisinau), at the invitation of the Association of Environmental and Ecological Tourism Journalists (AEETJ). The edition of 2021 was organized by AEETJ thanks to the support provided by the Small Grants Program of the Global Environment Facility - United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Sweden, World Health Organization in Moldova, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment and the environmental community.
Researchers of the Institute of Zoology demonstrated collections of insects, aquatic molluscs, wet preparations of parasitic worms, paleozoological exhibits and recent editorials (monographs, methodological works, atlases, encyclopaedias) to visitors and talked about biological diversity of Moldova and the ways of its conservation to nature lovers.
Prof. Laurenția Ungureanu, the Director of the Institute of Zoology, discussed with Ion Perju, the Minister of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment, and Valentina Țapeș, the State Secretary, on the impact of environmental conditions and climate change on animal species and their habitats on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, as well on the possibilities of implementing the scientific results, in order to preserve the species and to restore the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
The World Environment Day is celebrated annually on 5 June, being based on a special theme selected by the United Nations Environment Program. The theme of 2021 was "Restoring ecosystems". Read more: https://www.un.org/en/observances/environment-day
By marking the World Environment Day, the UN aims to stimulate people's concern for environmental protection and raise the awareness among policy makers.
