The methodological guide "Best Practices in Traditional Aquaculture," authors Bulat Dumitru and Bulat Denis, reflects the basic knowledge regarding traditional fish farming technologies and the prospects for using and adapting domestic aquaculture in the context of climate change in the Republic of Moldova.
A large number of issues are discussed, such as the general factors influencing the natural fish productivity of aquatic objectives, specific site conditions (climatic zone, quality of supply water, soil nature, etc.) and special factors related to technological operations, directed and coordinated by human factors:
- ameliorative-fish farming measures (monitoring and maintaining optimal physico-chemical parameters of the growth environment, periodically drying out of ponds – an important technological measure that contradicts the recent legislative framework provisions (law No. 149 of 08.06.2006 regarding the fish stock, fishing, and aquaculture);
- rational fertilization with organic and mineral fertilizers;
- use of lime amendments;
- correct water exchange;
- control and combating of emergent vegetation and excessive development of phytoplankton;
- formulas of fish stocking;
- aeration (or oxygenation if needed);
- rational feeding;
- curative measures and periodic prophylaxis against diseases (short-term baths, direct treatment in winter ponds, feeding with methylene blue, etc.).
The guide supports the training process of students in institutions with biological, ecological, or agricultural profiles.
