On 16-17 September 2021, the 10th International Conference of Zoologists "Sustainable use and protection of animal world in the context of climate change" dedicated to the 75th anniversary from the creation of the first research subdivisions and the 60th from the foundation of the Institute of Zoology took place within the Institute of Zoology.
The event brought together researchers and specialists from five countries (Republic of Moldova, Romania, Ukraine, Poland and Italy), who discussed on the functioning of populations and the role of animals in maintaining ecological balance; ecology of animal populations in natural and anthropized ecosystems; biological control in pest number regulation; invasive animal species and their ecological and socio-economic impact; environmental complex monitoring of river ecosystems and climate change; diversity of terrestrial and aquatic animal communities; protection of rare, endangered and vulnerable animal species in the conditions of anthropic pressure intensification and climatic changes; systematics, phylogeny, phylogeography and ecology of animals.
The event took place in a mixed format, using the ZOOM platform.
The opening session of the conference was also attended by representatives of the Ministry of Education and Research, the Ministry of Environment, National Agency for Quality Assurance in Education and Research, National Agency for Public Health, State Agency on Intellectual Property and the Environment Agency, full members and corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (ASM), directors and deputy directors of research institutions, representatives of higher education institutions.
At the beginning of the event, the director of the Institute, Professor Laurenția Ungureanu, greeted the participants of the conference and paid tribute to the former directors of the Institute of Zoology: Academician Teodor Furdui (director during the years 1972-1991), Academician Ion Toderaș, who was in the position of director for 25 years (1993-2005; 2009-2018), Professor Andrei Munteanu (director during the years 2006-2008).
In turn, Academician Ion Toderaș, Honorary director of the Institute of Zoology, thanked to the team of the institute for cherishing the history and personalities who founded the institute, but also by contributing to the obtaining of valuable scientific results.
The opening speeches belonged to Academician Ion Tighineanu, President of ASM, Professor Ion Mereuță, director of the Institute of Physiology and Sanocreatology, PhD Liliana Cepoi, director of the Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology, PhD Vasile Stegărescu, director of the Institute of Ecology and Geography, Corresponding member Alexandru Stratan, director of the National Institute for Economic Research, Academician Maria Duca, PhD Vitalie Sochircă, dean of the Faculty of Biology and Pedology, Moldova State University, Professor Liviu-Dan Miron, Vice-rector of the Ion Ionescu de la Brad Iasi University of Life Sciences, Professor Antoaneta Ene, Dunarea de Jos University of Galati, Romania, Professor Nicola Sasanelli, Institute for Sustainable Plant Protection, Bary, Italy, Professor Wanda Maria Weiner, Institute of Systematics and Evolution of Animals of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Greetings were sent by Dr.Hab. Gheorghe Cuciureanu, Head of the Research and Innovation Evaluation Department, National Agency for Quality Assurance in Education and Research, Dumitru Gorelco, Head of the Biodiversity Policy Department, Ministry of Environment, Professor Constantin Spinu, National Agency for Public Health, Oleg Ciocoi, President of the republican council of the Society of Hunters and Fishermen of the Republic of Moldova and others.
In her one hour presentation, Professor Laurentia Ungureanu reviewed the history, activity and results of the Institute in different periods (1946-1961-1991-2021), the activity of scientific schools, founders of the Institute, etc.
Several institutions and personalities from the country and abroad have been awarded diplomas of gratitude as a sign of recognition and high appreciation of exceptional merits in supporting and promoting scientific investigations in the field of zoology, expanding collaborative relationships, reviewing scientific papers, preparing highly qualified staff, the implementation of international projects and on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Institute of Zoology.
The event continued with the presentation of the reports in plenary and in three sections, which also took place in a mixed format, using the ZOOM platform:
1. International interdisciplinary cooperation in environmental complex monitoring of aquatic ecosystems and climate change;
2. Invertebrates;
3. Terrestrial vertebrates.
