Professor Laurentia Ungureanu was elected as the correspondent member of ASM

Nineteen corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (ASM) were elected at the General Assembly of ASM on 10 March 2023 and among them is professor Laurentia Ungureanu, doctor habilitate in biological sciences, director of the Institute of Zoology.

Mrs. Laurentia Ungureanu, doctor habilitate in biological sciences at the speciality 166.01. Ecology (2011) and research professor at the speciality 166.01. Ecology (2013), currently holds the position of principal scientific researcher in the Laboratory of Hydrobiology and Ecotoxicology of the Institute of Zoology (since 2012) and that of director of the Institute of Zoology (since 2019). The scientific activity of prof. Ungureanu L. is focused on the research of aquatic biodiversity, the influence of environmental factors on aquatic ecosystems, certain species and on the productivity of hydrobionts. Overall, the knowledge obtained has an edifying role for the development of the theory of the functioning of aquatic ecosystems. Another research direction of prof. Ungureanu L. is the use of planktonic algae in aquaculture and beekeeping. In the position of deputy director for scientific activity of the Institute of Zoology of the ASM (2006-2018) and later – in that of director of the Institute of Zoology, prof. Ungureanu L. has carried out a fruitful activity, in order to increase the scientific support in solving the problems faced by the Republic of Moldova, which is also expressed through collaboration with central public authorities and, first of all, those responsible for environmental protection, with the administration of natural reserves, with economic agents, public associations - all beneficiaries of the results of the Institute of Zoology. The solution of problems belongs to the competence of people with a researcher's thinking.

At the initiative of the academician Ion Toderaș and with the support of the collective of the Institute of Zoology, the scientific council of the Institute of Zoology decided unanimously on 26 December 2022 to nominate the candidacy of prof. Laurentia Ungureanu for participation in the competition regarding the election of corresponding members of ASM at the scientific profile 166. Ecology and environmental protection.

Your contribution to the development of science, the training of highly qualified staff, the management of the research process in the Republic of Moldova and the strengthening of collaborative relationships at the national and international level justifies your election as a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. The title of member of ASM is a great honour and a great responsibility, because this marks not only your person, but also the context in which you were formed and in which the excellent results were obtained.
