Contest Woodboring beetle - pests of icons

The Laboratory of Entomology of the Institute of Zoology, in partnership with Natura magazine, carried out between February - May 2023 the competition Woodboring beetle - pests of icons. During this period, scientific articles were published on the website of magazine about the xylophagous beetles that can be found in old wooden icons in the churches and homes of Orthodox believers.

The biology teachers, being tempted by the knowledge of xylophagous insects, promoted to the students in their classrooms information about the importance and role of xylophagous coleopterans in nature and in human life. Teachers and students evaluated the old icons in their own homes and those of close relatives, making observations on the presence of xylophagous insects or the result of their activity.

This competition, aiming to learn about the diversity of xylophagous insects, was started by teachers and students from all over the country. In particular, the following participants stood out: teachers - Veringă Tamara (Covurlui, Leova), Vrancean Irina (Bălți), Pricop Rodica (Sociteni, Ialoveni), Crăciun Raisa (Iargara, Leova), Vasiliev Liliana (Sadova, Călărași), students - Stanislavschi Alexandr (Bălți), Samoilenco Victoria (Chișinău), school pupils - Secrieru Nelea (Covurlui, Leova), Pricop Andreea (Sociteni, Ialoveni), Dragan Vitalie (Covurlui, Leova).
