The Red Book of the Republic of Moldova – the main subject of the information seminar held at the Moldova State University

On 23 September2024, in the premises of the Moldova State University, an information seminar was held in the framework of the project „Assessment of the state of plant, fungi and animal species, development of the list of species with rarity status and the algorithm for their presentation in the 4th edition of the Red Book of the Republic of Moldova", financed by the National Environment Fund. 

Researchers of the Institute of Zoology and those of the „Alexandru Ciubotaru" National Botanical Garden (Institute) aimed to disseminate scientific information on the state of plant, fungi and animal species on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, the need for environmental protection and biodiversity conservation.

Altogether, the seminar was attended by 77 people, including 54 students of the Faculty of Biology and Geosciences, Bachelor cycle, 4 teaching staff and 19 researchers - members of the project implementation team.

The seminar was opened by Dr. Assoc. Prof. Vitalie Sochircă, the dean of the Faculty of Biology and Geosciences. Also, Dr. Assoc. Prof. Ion Roșca, director of the "Alexandru Ciubotaru" National Botanical Garden (Institute), came with a welcome message.

Dr. Assoc. Prof. Lucia Bilețchi, scientific secretary of the Institute of Zoology, briefly presented the key elements of the above-mentioned project: objectives, coordinators of the implementation teams, activity groups, and budget.

The public was further informed about the rare plant species from the steppe habitats of the Republic of Moldova (Dr. Assoc. Prof. Veaceslav Ghendov), the current state of some rare plant species from the forest and scrub habitats of the Republic of Moldova (Dr. Assoc. Prof. Aliona Miron,), rare species of fish (Dr.Hab. Assoc. Prof. Dumitru Bulat), invertebrates (Dr.Hab. Assoc. Prof. Galina Bușmachiu), and the importance of the protection of rare species of terrestrial vertebrates (Dr.Hab. Assoc. Prof. Victoria Nistreanu).

It should be noted that this was the first of the six information seminars planned within the project „Assessment of the state of plant, fungi and animal species, development of the list of species with rarity status and the algorithm for their presentation in the 4th edition of the Red Book of the Republic of Moldova"" (implementation period: 2024-2026).
